Aitutaki’s Araura College mathematicians David Meti, Keegan Hagen, Teariki Solomona, Ngametua Tuaiti, Nooroa Maoate, Pearl Maoate, Tapere Tepaki and Deborah Solomona swept up the awards at Wednesday’s National Mathematics Quiz, under the watchful eye of maths teacher Lewis Ellis (centre).

impression on its Rarotonga-based opponents on Wednesday night.

The pa enua youngsters dominated their categories at the maths competition and will head home with six prizes from the night.

The schools form 1 team shone in their competition and won out over their capital island cousins in a high-scoring performance at the National Auditorium.

But David Meti, Keegan Hagen, Teariki Solomona and Ngametua Tuaiti werent content in just snagging first spot for their age group.

No, the team decided it would compete in the next age group up and pitted their nearest rivals and Araura College colleagues to win that competition too.

It wasnt like they breezed into the top spot, either. The Araura form 2 team had made the journey over looking to win its second title in two years.

In the end, form 2s Nooroa Maoate, Pearl Maoate, Tapere Tepaki and Deborah Solomona had to settle for second place and a special prize.

The schools winnings will go towards sending teams over for next year as well as a little bit of a party for this years efforts, said head of maths Lewis Collins who accompanied the kids to Rarotonga for the competition.

He said the students teacher Tepaerau Nelio was the expert behind the brains for Araura and praised Ministry of Education organiser Strickland Upu for putting on another great event.

For his part, Upu said the event would not have been possible without the support of sponsors like the ANZ Bank and Air Rarotonga, as well as the plethora of secondary sponsors.
